Wendy Moreland, award winning mixed media artist known for creating unique quilled /paper edge art using a modern non-traditional approach to her designs, began her art journey early in Eastern lowa where she was born and raised. She managed a custom frame shop and art gallery in the mid-1980’s before moving to Texas in 1994 to work for Webb Gallery in Atascocita which offered her the opportunity to design and frame a wider range of art and unique items. In 1988 she won two awards for her custom framing designs at the annual Professional Picture Framers Association’s (PPFA) framing Competition.
In 2000, Wendy began her new career working in commercial construction. Today, you will find her working her “day job” as a Contracts Administrator for Structure Tone Southwest’s Houston Office. In 2011, Wendy married Bill Moreland of Conroe, Texas and once their new blended family settled down, she was able to find local art classes through The Conroe Art League (CAL) where she is a current member. Working diligently in the art community to develop her own style, she has experience in different mediums; Acrylic, Collage, Cold Wax & Oil and Ceramics/Pottery, which helped her discover her passion for quilling.
Quilling is an old art form where paper is trimmed into strips and manipulated into various shapes which are then adhered to a substrate creating a design or scene. The result is a rich, 3-d piece of art. Wendy has a modern take on this older craft and often lays in a foundation grid or pattern as a guide; she creates multiple quilled shapes for the base layer and adds additional forms to achieve visual depth and interest, taking the art form to a whole new level of design. Wendy’s work has been exhibited in multiple juried shows, including Archway Gallery, Messina Hof Winery and The Conroe Art League.
